Four generations of Doris' family have lived on the muddy banks of Bayou Grosse Tete in Pointe Coupee Parish Louisiana. About 1885 her great grandfather Theodore Dreyfus came from Germany via New York to manage a general store owned by his New Orleans cousins. The hightway between New Orleans and Canada followed the bayou and passed in front of the store. The store and adjacent house supported the cousins' lumber and farming businesses.
He married Blondina Wolff in 1889 and had Rosina, Mabel, Max, Alfred "Joe", and Henry. About 1901 he purchased the store and house from Rosa Dreyfus Gumble, the widow of Cornelius Gumbel, former owner of Live Oak Plantation and resident of New Orleans. Fmaily folklore has it that Rosa was a cousin but that is yet to be proven. Over the next few years he purchased several tracts of land which became the Dreyfus family farm. In 1987 Doris's uncle and father retired and the store became Joe's Dreyfus Store Restaurant operated by Joe and Diane Major, world renowned restaurateurs.
Theodore's home, built about 1850, was added onto in the 1890's (to make room for the children), restored about 1992 and is now known as the Dreyfus House Bed & Breakfast. It is a lodging and private dining and meeting facility operated by the Estate of Theo Dreyfus, Inc..
Doris's grandmother was born in Dreyfus House and moved to Paincourtville when she married Alphonse Weil in 1914. Doris' mother and uncle were born in Paincourtville and moved with their family back to Dreyfus House in 1934. Both mother and uncle lived at Dreyfus House until they married and moved next door (one on each side of Dreyfus House) where they still live.
Doris lives in Baton Rouge, has two sons and one husband. The
eldest, Jason graduated from Auburn with a degree in Software Engineering,
lives in Atlanta, Georgia, works as a Computer Systems Specialist for Emory
University, is engaged to Carla Brunjes and is scheduled to marry in May
2002. Michael, the youngest, graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta,
Georgia with a degree in Computer Engineering, worked for Raytheon Corporation
in Boston and Tucson and now works for IBM in Austin doing MicroProcessor
Chip Simulation.
